VOTING

FOR TEENAGERS

We will give the young Australians the chance for their voices to be heard through the offering of non-compulsory voting for 16 and 17 year olds.

  • Due to recent events such as the growing concern for climate change and Black Lives Matter, young people wish for an opportunity to create change as their awareness of their surrounding issues increases.

  • Young people deserve a fair chance to share their highly valuable thoughts and opinions, and to help shape their own futures.

  • Studies have also shown that voting at a younger age is more likely to turn it into a habitual action. The result will be fewer yearly fines in the future to citizens who refuse to vote, as well as a more politically involved generation

OUR POLICY

  • The Edison Party will introduce a policy that gives young people at the age of 16 and 17 the opportunity to vote and have more of a say in politics.

  • There will be an annual deadline for 16 and 17 year old to register to vote. If they register, all rules on voting for Australians 18 and above will apply to them.

  • Additional ballot papers and individuals to count the votes will be funded by reducing the spending in defence as during this busy time of COVID-19, not many countries have the resources to start conflicts.
